google analyticsGoogle Analytics is a service offered by Google that generates detailed statistics about a website’s traffic and traffic sources. It is the most-widely used website statistics service available and is capable of measuring both conversions and sales.

The product is aimed at marketers as opposed to the webmasters and technologists from which the industry of web analytics originally grew. Google Analytics is capable of tracking visitors from all referrers including search engines, social networks, direct visits and referring sites. Displaying advertising, pay-per-click networks, email marketing and digital collateral such as links within PDF documents are also components of the product.

The service was developed from Urchin on Demand, a product of the Urchin Software Corporation which Google acquired in April 2005. The system also integrates components of the Adaptive Path product Measure Map, which was acquired in 2006. Google continued to sell the standalone installable Urchin WebAnalytics Software through a network of value-added resellers until discontinuation in March of 2012.

Google unveiled their branded version of the software in 2005, yet due to overwhelming demand fro the service, new sign-ups were suspended just a week after the product hit the market. As capacity was added to the system, Google employed the use of a lottery-type invitation-code model through August of 2006. Since then, the service has been fully available to all users regardless of if they utilize Google for advertising or not.

In April 2011, Google announced the latest version of Google Analytics featuring multiple dashboards, more options of custom reports and a new interface design. The system has since been updated to include enhanced features such as real-time analytics and goal flow charts. The latest version of Google Analytic tracking code is known as the asynchronous tracking code, which is purported to be significantly more sensitive and accurate, being able to track even very short activities on a website.

You can use Analytics to track as many websites as you own. We’ve provided multiple reporting views in your account, so you can view individual reports for specific domains or subdomains. Track your Facebook, MySpace, WordPress or other solutions with Analytics. We recommend that you search for third party widgets that simplify the Analytics setup for pre-defined site templates. In some cases, you many not be able to use Analytics on sites where you cannot edit the page code (i.e. MySpace). However, often you can find plugins or widgets that will help you use Analytics in your page.

In order for Google Analytics to track data it is necessary that the Google Analytics tracking code is executed. Since most RSS/atom readers cannot execute JavaScript, Analytics will not count page views that are loaded through an RSS reader. Analytics requires that the user execute a JavaScript file on Google’s servers in order to track those page views. You can run Google Analytics in parallel with any third-party or internal solution you’ve already deployed.
